Overthinking (also known as “ruminating”) is when you continuously think about the past, present, and/or future of something or someone. This can be personal relationships or engagements with friends, family members, work-related events, life decisions that you make on a daily basis, social relationships (like friendships or romantic relationships), or even thoughts of your past that may cause you to stress by occurring repeatedly in your mind.

Signs And Symptoms Of Overthinking?

There are many signs that indicate you may be suffering from overthinking. These signs include: constantly speaking about the same topic (this can occur with friends, family members, or significant others), finding it difficult to concentrate on anything at work because of constantly thinking about what happened that morning, constantly repeating the same mistakes over and over again, constantly thinking about what you said or did even though it is already forgotten by those around you (friends and family members), and having a difficult time concentrating on anything at work because of what may or may not happen in the future.

Overthinking can affect every aspect of your life. If you feel that you are constantly thinking about something without being able to stop, then this may be a sign of overthinking. In brief, here is a list of some common signs and symptoms:

·         Difficulty concentrating on the present moment

·         Feeling restless all the time

·         Mind going blank

·         Loss of sleep and or difficulty sleeping

·         Having a hard time making decisions because of constant overthinking

Overcoming overthinking:

If you are stuck in the pattern of thinking about something without being able to stop, then it is important to take measures to overcome this. The following are some helpful steps to take to overcome overthinking:

1.  Avoid the situation completely (if possible)

2.  Talk about your thoughts with someone ( friends, family members, colleagues, etc)

4.  Allow yourself some time each day where you are not thinking about something that will help you feel refreshed. This can be as simple as taking a walk, exercising, or writing down your thoughts.

5.  There are other things that you can do to help yourself get out of the cycle. For example, if you are stuck in the pattern of thinking about someone continuously then imagine that person doing something embarrassing or humiliating. This should allow you to feel better and find a way to stop thinking about the person.

6.  If you are constantly thinking about a certain topic or event, try writing down your thoughts every day without judgment of right or wrong. This can help you feel better because you see how much time is being spent on one thing instead of allowing yourself to get lost in one event.

7.  Next, try writing down answers to the questions you are asking yourself. For example, if you are constantly thinking about an argument that occurred then write out who was at fault and why. This can help because once you have written your thoughts then it is easier for your mind to see what is right or wrong with the situation.

8.  Lastly, if you have written out your thoughts and can still find a way to keep thinking about something then it may be a good idea to speak with a professional about how to stop overthinking entirely.
